At http://www.mta.me, Conductor turns the New York subway system into an interactive string instrument. Using the MTA’s actual subway schedule, the piece begins in realtime by spawning trains which departed in the last minute, then continues accelerating through a 24 hour loop. The visuals are based on Massimo Vignelli’s 1972 diagram.

To represent this, camera birds – city birds with cameras instead of heads – were placed throughout the city centre of Utrecht where they feed on the presence of people. In addition, a camera bird in captivity was displayed to show the feeding process and to make the everyday breach of our privacy more personal and tangible.”

A promotional live-action short movie entitled Bright Falls was officially released on 27 April 2010 and serves as a prequel to the game Alan Wake. It is divided into six episodes and can be watched online at brightfalls.com.

I really like the idea to begin a game with several short movies to promotional use or just to start with the immersion, before you can actually play the game.

A man walking around at night with an iPad lanyard around his neck, displaying semi-nude artwork, could be seen as a meandering perv. Or, as was the case in Bogota, the man is Claudio Arango, and he’s an artist.

The artwork is certainly interesting, although I’m going to dock points for not taking advantage of the pinch and zoom features that are native to any Apple touchscreen device these days. Update: Sorry, but points back on the board. As sturm notes below, there is certainly some pinching going on in there.

More seriously, it really is amazing how a feature that’s as simple and ubiquitous as touchscreen swiping can still fascinate people. Or maybe it was just the boobs. Either way, that’s some simple, yet powerful stuff right there.

The Keystick collapsible keyboard concept looks like it was designed with portability in mind, but its true purpose is actually rooted more in swine flu than road warrior.

Indeed, designers Yoonsang Kim and Eunsung Park designed this keyboard with true paranoia in mind. They even slapped a “None Bacteria Project” label on there so there’s no confusion about the design’s true purpose. Bring this Japanese fan of a keyboard around with you, and never have to touch a filthy public terminal ever again. Or something. [Yanko Design via DVICE]

Torontoist has a terrific article on Sean Martindale’s latest project, Free. Sean tells us:

“The Art Gallery of Ontario kindly let me use their parking lot for this project. It’s a fenced-off enclosure that bisects Butterfield Park and Grange Park here in downtown Toronto. The installation became a bit of a marathon as I tied it together over a solid twenty-four hour period, overnight and through some light rain. In the end, I used more than 21,663 feet of salvaged string – two high-tension lengths for each of the 231 points/nodes crossing the 44-foot distance between the fences, plus the letter outlines. So far, the squirrels haven’t chewed on it for their nests…’

Glitter and Doom is the latest Tom Waits CD, a double live-disc featuring tracks from his US/Euro 2008 tour, along with a disc of him basically telling jokes and shooting the shit with the audience. It’s a real winner.

Waits is one of my favorite recording artists and an even better performer. This album amply demonstrates why a Tom Waits concert ticket is worth anything they want to charge for it, as old favorites like “Singapore” are brought to new life with a sprightly, sinister rendition that reminded me of how I was transported the first time I heard it. The torchy numbers like “I’ll Shoot the Moon” are heartbreaking loser’s ballads, shot through with hope and sorrow. And the angry, uptempo songs like “Falling Down” and “Goin’ Out West” make you want to do something self-destructive and brave and dumb.

Honestly, there isn’t a single sub-par track on this disc, nor should there be. After all, this is Tom Waits, the reeling hurdy-gurdy poet of the rasping voice and the ominous circus lyrics. And it’s Waits live, palpably feeding off the energy of the audience. It’s magnificent.

A new video game called Mass: We Pray brings new family fun to those who can’t wait until Sunday to go to church. It has a cross-shaped motion-sensing controller reminiscent of a Wiimote, and you can collect “grace points” in order to unlock holy mysteries. The release date is slated for Spring 2010, but it’s available for pre-order now.
